What is a QR code?

QR code is a member of bar code family. Several types of bar codes are available in the world today to serve different business needs and etc. Among all those types, QR code has its significant importance. As name itself says that it is Quick Response code, decoding process will be done at high speed. It is a specific two dimensional code. It’s easily readable by dedicated QR bar code readers, camera telephones and computers with necessary software including web cams.

Who started it?

It was created by Toyota (Japan) subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994 (referred Wikipedia). The technology has seen frequent use in Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea, while the rest of the world has been slower in the adoption of QR codes.

What it can hold?

QR code can have different types of data like Website URL, Text, Phone Number, SMS Message, Email Address, Contact Details (VCARD), Event (VCALENDAR), Google Maps Location and iTunes Link etc.

Where can I find?

As it became popular throughout the world, one can easily observe them in shopping malls (on the tags of different goods), airports,  museums, road side wall posters and on business cards etc.

How to use or read?

While walking on the road or in the shopping mall, one can easily scan QR codes by using their smartphone and get access to the respective website which avoids the bother of typing URL in small QWERTY keyboard of phone.  If you find a business card with QR code, which means you can easily save the info into your smartphone with no hassle of typing .

How to generate?

There are plenty of websites which can generate QR codes based on your business or individual needs. Sample QR code links up our BlogSpot. I really loved the way it showed up in my iPhone while using below code to open our blog.

There are so many apps to read these barcodes in iPhone and Android markets. I have checked out couple of them to my iPhone. My vote goes to Scan and RedLaser. Scan decodes and shows its content inside the app itself. It has camera light on/off button too. RedLaser decodes and opens the content in safari browser if it is website URL. And the nice feature with RedLaser is one can easily generate QR code and mail it or save to their
iPhone.
